Can I replace the spinning disks in a conventional disk array with SSDs?

2017-09-02

Yes, you can, but you will experience performance bottlenecks and a shortened SSD lifespan.

The RAID 5 algorithm used in conventional disk arrays has more overhead in both modification and random write operations. The 4KB random write IOPS in software RAID 5 is around 5K - 78K. AccelStor FlexiRemap technology converts random writes into sequential writes to reach extreme performance of up to 1M IOPS. Due to the limited P/E cycles of flash memory, FlexiRemap uses global wear leveling to double the flash lifespan as compared to conventional disk arrays.

For detailed information, please refer to the “FlexiRemap Technology” webpage or download the “FlexiRemap Technology Brief” on the “Downloads” webpage.
